In Open Letter, Judge Roy Moore Urges Alabama Attorney General to Enforce Anti-Gambling Laws
December 5, 2006
Former Chief Justice Roy Moore has sent an open letter to Troy King, Attorney General of Alabama, calling on King to step up his office's efforts to end illegal gambling in Alabama. (Click here to read the letter.)
The recent gambling opinion by the Alabama Supreme Court relied on Opinion 373, issued by the Alabama Supreme Court during Chief Justice Roy Moore's tenure, as background for their ruling against the gambling industry. The release of Opinion 373 stopped the legislature from passing a bill that would have legalized certain video gaming machines by declaring those machines to be unconstitutional under the Alabama Constitution's anti-lottery provision. As a result, several raids by district attorneys on illegal gambling establishments occurred across the state.
The Foundation for Moral Law, of which Judge Moore is the chairman, is a national non-profit legal organization located in Montgomery, Alabama, and is dedicated to restoring the knowledge of God in law and government through two methods: litigation relating to moral issues and religious liberty cases; and education consisting of forums for the public and pastors' seminars.
