JUDGE ROY MOORE'S STATEMENT FOR PRO-LIFE LEGISLATIVE DAY

ALABAMA STATE HOUSE

JANUARY 26, 2010

During the last 37 years since the catastrophic decision in Roe v. Wade , over 50 million children have been murdered. Like slavery in early America or the slaughter of innocent Jews in Germany in the 1940's, abortion is a defining issue in our Country.

Historically and legally, life was recognized as sacred and entitled to protection under the 5th and 14th Amendments to the United States Constitution. Thirty-seven years is far too long for this Country to legalize — and even spend taxpayer dollars toward — violating the unalienable right to life endowed upon all men by the Creator.

I support principled efforts to define life from the moment of conception, such as SB301, which would define a “person” in the Alabama Code to include “any human being from the moment of fertilization.” Support and petitions for such personhood bills and constitutional amendments are gaining steam in other states, too, and abortion advocates are starting to take notice.

In fact, one prominent judge once wrote, “If this suggestion of [fetal] personhood is established, the [pro-abortion] case, of course, collapses, for the fetus' right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the [14th] Amendment.” [Roe , 410 U.S. 113, 156-57 (1973).] The author of that statement? Justice Harry Blackmun, who wrote that in Roe v. Wade.

Unborn children are already persons before the laws of nature and of nature's God. The laws and judicial decisions of Alabama and every other state and the federal government need to catch up. Personhood bills and amendments are the best way to restore justice to the unborn, as even Justice Blackmun recognized.

As if the loss of 50 million Americans is not enough, blatant disregard for our law and the lives of those yet to come will result in tragic consequences for our nation. We can ill-afford to remain silent at such a time as this. For the sake of our posterity, let us join together in opposition to this cruel and inhumane practice we know as abortion — and God will bless America again.
