Chief Justice Roy Moore Proposes Marriage Preservation Amendment

The Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, Roy S. Moore (http://judicial NULL.alabama NULL.gov/Bios/rmoore NULL.cfm), has proposed an amendment to the United States Constitution entitled the “Marriage Preservation Amendment.” In support of this proposed amendment he has issued a letter to all the governors, lieutenant governors, and legislative bodies of the fifty states urging each state to call for a “Convention for proposing amendments” under Article V of the Constitution. Each letter includes a state-specific proposed resolution and a proposed constitutional amendment protecting traditional marriage.

The Marriage Preservation Amendment reads:
Nothing in this Constitution or in the constitution or laws of any state shall define or shall be construed to define marriage except as the union of one man and one woman, and no other union shall be recognized with the legal incidents thereof within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
