Whether it is the recent health care bill that pays for abortions, the steady loss of religious liberty, or the general decline in national morality, many Americans concerned with the direction of our country keep asking in despair, “What can I do?”

Many good people have marched on Washington with a handmade sign in their hand and an understandable frustration in their heart, beseeching our elected and unelected leaders to return to their limited, constitutional roles.  Much of that popular reaction, however, while at the core of our historic and God-given right as free people, has only fallen on the deaf ears of determined political ideologues. And many of those marchers and TEA Partiers have consequently vowed to “Remember in November.”

During the height of the fury a few weeks ago, on the very day that Congress passed the health care bill, this scripture, Psalm 37: 1-8 (NKJV), came to my attention. I believe it holds the key to how we should direct our response.  I hope it also encourages you.

1 Do not fret because of evildoers,
Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,
And wither as the green herb.

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself also in the LORD,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the LORD,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.
6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,
And your justice as the noonday.

7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
Do not fret—it only causes harm.

Fretting and fuming in the face of wicked schemes does no good; in fact, the Word says it causes harm. Better instead to trust in the Lord and be sure our ways are committed to Him.  The last verse of Psalm 37 says,

39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD;
He is their strength in the time of trouble.
40 And the LORD shall help them and deliver them;
He shall deliver them from the wicked,
And save them,
Because they trust in Him.

I do not mean to categorize those passing bad and unlawful legislation as “wicked,” though I cannot categorically exclude them. Rather, I post this scripture to emphasize where—or rather on Who—our focus should be. If it is truly In God We Trust, if we believe He is still sovereign over the affairs of men, then we ought to act accordingly.

Appropriately, Christian leaders including Dr. James Dobson are calling people from around the nation to Washington, D.C. for a time of prayer for our country on May 1, 2010.  It’s called May Day 2010: A Cry to God for a Nation in Distress.

This event is not to promote a party or policy, just simply to pray to the God in Whom we trust.  Follow the link or click the graphic for more information and practical ways to spread the word.

“Do not fret.” Rather, let us pray.

One Response to “Mayday, May Day 2010”

  1. 1 our founding truth

    I believe the health care bill is completely Constitutional, unless abortions are paid for by any public money. Col. Alexander Hamilton proved article I, section 8, supports implied powers, (The National Bank) that do not violate the Scriptures.

    Frankly, I am against the corruption of the insurance companies, and their fleecing God’s people. Those companies have cornered the market, and can raise premiums at will, with no recourse. No doubt, Hamilton would have promoted a free market to acquire health insurance for the “General Welfare.” Just as congress mandated the people to acquire guns (the militia act of 1792), although without charging them as the health-care bill, the health bill is of the same nature.

    Deut. 15, gives no indication whatsoever that government was not to provide for the poor. God says the people can deal with other nations; for us, the government is the people.

    Hamilton blew Jefferson and Madison’s defense of enumerated powers out of the water. More importantly, Jefferson and Madison died infidels, Hamilton is saved.

    Where is the evidence, abortions will be paid with tax dollars?
